Pflugerville partners with the Girl Scouts to encourage water conservation
patch The city of Pflugerville water conservation team has partnered with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas to create the Water Conservation Patch for water conservation.

“Together we can make a difference, and that’s the key message behind the Water Conservation Girl Scout patch,” Water Conservation Education Specialist Patricia Rinehart said. “The patch is a tool to educate girls on the importance of water as a valuable resource and how to conserve it. We are proud to launch this patch to reach all 46 counties in the Central Texas region and teach the importance of water conservation.”

The patch specifications and requirements were designed and coordinated by city staff and sent for approval to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas. "Since August is Girl Scouts of Central Texas conservation month, launching the patch in August provided the perfect opportunity to announce the patch and explain conservation during one of Texas’ driest months," Rinehart said.

The patch program has various tiers and requirements based on age for the girls to complete from kindergarten to 12th grade. The girls observe, connect and take action to help with water conservation. Depending on grade level, the girls are asked to tour a water plant or observe a local water supply, brainstorm activities to conserve and take action to get the message out to their family and friends.

“It is our mission to help girls develop their leadership skills so that they can take action on important issues in their community,” said Lynelle McKay, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Texas. “Water conservation is a major issue of the 21st century and our girls are being prepared to find sustainable solutions. This partnership is key to this effort.”

Pflugerville is proud to present the patches to the first Pflugerville Girl Scout troop to complete the program at the September 22 City Council meeting at 7 p.m., and to highlight the patch which names and recognizes Pflugerville, but will also be used across Central Texas to teach girls to conserve.

Back to School next week!
The first day of school in Pflugerville is August 25. Students are at new schools and establishing their travel routine to and from school. Please remember the law prohibit drivers from using a handheld cell phone in school zones which carries a fine of $200.
back to school
Talk to your child before the first day of school:  We suggest talking to your child about the route to school. Frequent problems at schools include double-parked cars and children darting between cars or getting off their bicycles. If dropping your child off, arrive early so that you are not rushed after dropping off your child. Discuss safety rules with your child before you get to the school and proper methods to walk around automobile traffic. Consider walking or riding a bike to school with your child for the first week to get them comfortable with their routine. Be careful, slow down for our kids. View this video and make sure you know all the rules about cell phone use in Pflugerville.
