Girl Scouts recognized at City Council for Water Conservation Patch
girlscoutsAt the Tuesday, September 22, City Council meeting, Mayor Jeff Coleman awarded patches to Pflugerville Girl Scouts who recently completed the requirements for the Pflugerville Water Conservation Patch in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas.

The patch will be used as a tool to educate Girl Scout participants on the importance of water as a valuable resource and how to conserve it. The patch is available to all Girl Scouts in the 46 counties of the Central Texas region.

The patch specifications and requirements were designed and coordinated by city staff and sent for approval to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas. Since August is Girl Scouts of Central Texas conservation month, launching the patch in August provided the perfect opportunity to announce the patch and explain conservation during one of Texas’ driest months.

With a better understanding of a city’s water supply system, the City of Pflugerville water conservation staff is optimistic that young people will be motivated to take care of water resources and make conservation a way of life. The importance of water conservation will be learned by Girl Scouts participating in one of 48 active troops consisting of 392 girls in Pflugerville and 46 Central Texas counties.

Pflugerville Pink Pfridays for breast cancer awareness
pink pfridaysAt the September 22 City Council meeting, the Mayor read a proclamation declaring every Pfriday in October as Pflugerville Pink Pfridays, encouraging people to wear pink in support of breast cancer.  Khala Hanson, 17, started Pflugerville Pink Pfridays to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women with
research showing that about 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. Mammograms aid in early detection.

The Pflugerville Police Department is supporting breast cancer by wearing a pink ribbon on their uniforms during the month of October. On Fridays, officers can wear a pink undershirt under their uniform to show support.

Pictured is Khala and her friends wearing the official Pink Pfriday shirt which reads "Pink is cute; Cancer is NOT."
