Water Quality Maintenance Flushing begins June 17
From June 17 – July 17, 2013, the City of Pflugerville will perform a routine chlorine burn out to the water system which will help prevent discoloration, odor and taste in the city’s water.
flushing hydrant“The city is dedicated to providing the best quality water we can,” public works director James Wills said. “During this chlorine burn out, we will perform a chlorine shock and extensive directional flushing to the system to help remove any iron, manganese or other constituents in the water mains. When we finish, the water quality will be substantially better than before, and the program will save money, keep operational costs down and provide a higher-quality product.”

There are no associated health risks to the process. During these efforts to improve water quality, there will be times of lower water pressure, possible odor and taste or small rust particles in the water. The city will attempt to flush the particles, color and odor from the mains with directional flushing; however, there is a possibility that some of the color and odor will get into customer lines. The water is safe to drink.  More Information.

Pflugerville participates in the World's Largest Swim Lesson
™  (WLSL)
The city of Pflugerville joins thousands of children around the globe on June 18 at 10 a.m. as a participant in the world’s largest swim lesson at Gilleland Creek Pool, 700 Railroad Ave.

"While it is fun to be a part of a lesson that is being taught simultaneously nationwide, the purpose of the swim lesson is ultimately water safety," city of Pflugerville aquatics manager Kyle Benedict said.worlds largest swim lesson

According to the World's Largest Swimming Lesson ™ (WLSL) the Guinness World Record attempt was created to spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives ™ as drowning is the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related deaths of children ages 1-14. The 30 minute swim lesson will teach how to tread water, proper swimming form and will review swimming fundamentals.
With central Texans inevitably looking for a way to cool off from the summer heat, it is important that everyone know how to swim, and never swim alone.

Pflugerville to celebrate Flag Day with a flag pole garden dedication at Lake Pflugerville
Pflugerville will celebrate Flag Day on June 14 at 7 p.m. as the Pflugerville Garden Society dedicates a flag pole garden to the city at Lake Pflugerville, 18216 Weiss Lane.

garden workCome out tonight to see the amazing transformation! The garden society planted red yucca, blackfoot daisy, rock penstemon and hymenoxys.

The club started in February of 2013. As one of their first projects, the society built and planted a garden around the flag pole on the north shore of Lake Pflugerville, 18216 Weiss Lane. To celebrate the garden, there will be a Flag Day ceremony to dedicate the garden to the city and all-American picnic. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair out to the lake, play with volleyball and beach balls and enjoy an evening on the shores of Lake Pflugerville.

The garden society is actively getting involved in the Pflugerville community while promoting gardening. The society is a group of local Pflugerville residents with green thumbs who want to contribute to further beautifying Pflugerville. The new Garden Society president is Ronda Gindin who also serves as an alternate on the Parks and Recreation Commission Board. The society hosted a children’s planting activity at the library grand opening on June 8 and will be at the Pfirecracker Pfestival in July to further promote the society and invite gardeners to join the club.

Learn folk music with Steve Brooks in the Summer Reading Program at the Library
The Pflugerville Library hosts Steve Brooks June 20 at 6 p.m. with a Music That Made America program at the library! Steve Brooks

American folk music has a rich heritage of songs for kids of all ages. Veteran Austin folksinger Steve Brooks brings these songs to life. By singing them and telling the stories behind them, he entertains and educates at the same time.

Steve’s shows are multicultural, showing how Irish, Mexican, Cajun, African-American and Native American songs have added their colors to the tapestry of American music. They’re multi-instrumental, introducing kids to instruments like the tinwhistle, the mandolin, the accordion and the rubboard. He’ll get kids K-6 singing along, clapping, tying their ears in knots and throwing them over their shoulders. His Music That Made America (Grades K-6) program is an Introduction to American folk songs and instruments, from the Seneca nation to Woody Guthrie! We'll see you at the Library June 20 for this special storytelling, musical event!

Mtech to relocate hundreds of jobs to Pflugerville
The Pflugerville Community Development Corporation (PCDC) announced Tuesday that Mtech, a commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and electrical services company and subsidiary of Comfort Systems USA, will construct a $3.5 million, 33,000-square-foot regional headquarters building. Construction will begin immediately and be complete by the end of the year.

Mtech will build the new regional corporate office, training and fabrication facility on a 4.5-acre tract of land at 1720 Royston Lane, an industrial area in Pflugerville.

“Securing established, growing primary employers is the pillar of economic development success. With them, we increase our daytime population, which brings additional retailers, which brings additional entertainment, which brings additional revenue for our city to serve our citizens,” PCDC Executive Director Floyd Akers said. “Mtech is exactly the kind of corporation we want to attract to Pflugerville—one that has been around for decades, will be around for decades, and has solid growth plans.”

The Pflugerville City Council approved a $356,000 incentive agreement proposed by the PCDC for Mtech that is based on jobs at a June 11 meeting. “The short turnaround time for the plan review process in Pflugerville was key to our decision to locate here,” said Mtech President Bob Fabrizio. “The premium of a build-to-suit building was offset by the incentives.”
