    Author and and musician Angela Smith will share details of the vivid history of the steel drum, the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. She'll also perform and give others a chance to try out playing this unique instrument created by accident by young boys in Trinidad who were descendants of African slaves. Smith is the author of Steel Drums and Steelbands: A History and Women Drummers: A History from Rock and Jazz to Blues and Country. Free! Online registration opened February 21.

  1. Karate - Ages 7 to 11

    January 12, 4:30 PM - February 28, 10:00 AM @ Pflugerville Recreation Center

    Enshin Karate is a practical system of empty-handed self-defense. Based on a strategy of circular movement, this form of karate uses an opponent's power and momentum against him or her. This enables its practitioner to convert defense into offense. Enshin stresses development of flexibility, power and speed with emphasis on stretching, conditioning and technique. Classes are held at the Recreation Center, multi-purpose classroom, second floor, 400 Immanuel Road.
