The City of Pflugerville provides Basic Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), and Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance.

Life Insurance pays benefits in the event of your death from most causes. AD&D benefits are paid if your death is accidental or you are severely injured due to an accident and suffer a loss specified in the policy, such as loss of limb or eyesight. You may also purchase Supplemental Life Insurance for yourself and/or your dependents.

An additional benefit provided for full time employees is Long Term Disability (LTD). This offers a source of income if you experience a long-term illness or injury that prevents you from working.

For more details review the Basic Life/AD&D and Supplemental Life Benefit Summary and/or the Basic LTD Benefit Summary.

Retirement

The City of Pflugerville has made its plan with the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) a highly regarded benefit.

It works like this:

  • Payroll deducts 7% of an employee's gross pay before taxes
  • Then, for every $1 employees contribute (through the 7% initial payroll deduction)
  • The city matches with a $2 contribution.

The City of Pflugerville's vesting requirement (years of service for eligibility) to receive this benefit is 5 years of public service. Service retirement eligibility is 5 years at age 60 OR 20 years at any age.

You can get Restricted Prior Service Credits for every month you have worked full-time in a public sector job like another city, the state, a school district, county or the military. If you have worked full-time in one of these and have not completed the TMRS Prior Service Credit form, visit the forms page of the intranet. Although this doesn't add any money to your TMRS retirement account you will be that much closer to vesting or retiring.

For more information regarding your retirement, please visit the TMRS website.

Flexible Spending Account

The city offers Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), also known as an IRS Section 125 cafeteria plan.

This plan allows employees to have 'pre-taxed' payroll deductions for health insurance premiums, un-reimbursed medical expenses and child/dependent care expenses. The deductions are withheld from salary 'pre-taxed'; which is before income tax and social security deductions are calculated. Switching expenses to 'pre-tax' can result in immediate tax savings on Social Security tax and Federal Income tax.

The maximum amount an employee can authorize the city to deduct for a Medical Reimbursement Account through a payroll deduction is set by the city ($2,650 in 2018). The IRS sets the limit for the Dependent/Child Care Reimbursement account. When expenses are paid for both health care and dependent/child care expenses, the employee submits receipts to be reimbursed for the tax-free dollars.

The Medical Reimbursement Account allows an employee to rollover up to $500 of unused deductions from the prior year.

The Flexible Spending Accounts are administered by SBS Administrative Services. Learn more about this benefit by reviewing the SBS Enrollment Booklet or visiting them online.
