Swimming lessons - We offer a level to fit your child
Instructors teaching lessons
Various levels of swimming and water safety class instruction are offered:
  • Parent and Child Aquatics -- one level   
  • Preschool Aquatics --  three different levels
  • Learn to Swim -- three different levels

The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level. Level one has no prerequisites. Each level also includes instruction in water safety.

Rockets (Parent and Child): Ages 6 months to 3 years
This is a parent-and-child class which builds swimming readiness through games and songs. Parents will learn how to teach their children various skills to increase swimmers’ confidence, coordination and safety in the water.


Bears (Preschool 1): Ages 3 years to 5 years
For beginners, this class introduces water skills that will help children feel comfortable in the water and enjoy water safely.
Skills taught: 

  • blowing bubbles
  • going under water 
  • floating on back and stomach
  • introduction of the freestyle stroke 

No prior swimming skills are needed. The purpose of the class is to get younger children to feel comfortable and safe in water without parents. Teachers will introduce freestyle kick and arms, and kick on back. Swimmers will have support from instructor through all skills.


Mustangs (Preschool 2): Ages 3 to 5 years
This class builds upon skills learned in Preschool 1 and introduces new strokes.
Skills needed:

  • Be comfortable in water up to the chest and lying on back with support. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of freestyle
Skills taught:  
  • freestyle  
  • backstroke
  • breaststroke kick

The purpose of this class is to continue to work on freestyle, complete backstroke with arms and introduce the breaststroke-through kick. The goal is that the child will be able to swim freestyle and backstroke independently or with minimal assistance, and introduce the breaststroke kick.

Sharks (Preschool 3): Ages 3 to 5 years
This class will refine freestyle, backstroke and introduce two competitive strokes: butterfly and breaststroke.
Skills needed:
  • able to swim freestyle and backstroke for 10 yards without support, 
  • demonstrate knowledge of the breaststroke

Skills taught:

  • freestyle
  • backstroke 
  • breaststroke
  • butterfly

The purpose of this class is to refine freestyle and backstroke by introducing drills and focusing on breathing. Swimmers will learn to complete the breaststroke and learn butterfly with arms and its timing sequence. The goal is for children to be able to swim all four strokes competently.


Cougars (Level 1): Ages 6 and older
For beginners, this class introduced water skills that will help children feel comfortable in and enjoy the water safely.
Skills Needed:

  • no previous skills required
Skills Taught:
  • safely entering and exiting pool
  • floating on front and back
  • bobbing
  • freestyle
  • elementary backstroke
  • backstroke kick

Hawks (Level 2): Age 6 and older

This class continues to work on freestyle and introduces new strokes.
Skills needed:

  • should be comfortable in water that is over the child’s head 
  • lying back in water with minimal support
  • demonstrate knowledge of freestyle and kicking on back
Skills taught:
  • freestyle
  • backstroke 
  • breaststroke kick
The purpose of this class is to continue to work on freestyle, complete backstroke with arms and introduce breaststroke and butterfly through kick. The goal is for the child to be able to swim the freestyle and backstroke independently or with minimal assistance for a distance of 25 meters, and understand the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.


Panthers (Level 3): Age 6 and older
This class will refine the freestyle and backstroke, and teach the last two competitive strokes: butterfly and breaststroke.
Skills needed: 
  • swim freestyle and backstroke for a distance of 15 yards without support
  • demonstrate knowledge of breaststroke

Skills taught:

  • freestyle
  • backstroke
  • breaststroke
  • butterfly 

The purpose of this class is to refine freestyle and backstroke by introducing drills. Complete the breaststroke and learn butterfly with arms, kick and its timing sequence. The goal is that children will be able to swim all four strokes competently for a length of 25 meters.



Private Lessons
Private lessons are offered for those individuals who desire the benefits of one-on-one swimming instruction. Whether to improve specific techniques or gain overall confidence, private lessons are tailored to the individual.

Private lessons are offered Monday-Sunday during public swim hours. Lessons are scheduled on an individual basis at the convenience of both the student and instructor as well as the availability of The City of Pflugerville pools. Registration must be completed at the Pflugerville Recreation Center.

Cost: $75 for 4 x 30 minute sessions
