Tree City USA

tree city logoSince 2008 the City of Pflugerville has been recognized as a member of Tree City USA, an honorable designation which is the result of the City of Pflugerville’s efforts to cultivate a community and culture supportive of tree infrastructure. Pflugerville reached seven consecutive years of recognition as a Tree City USA from the Arbor Day Foundation and National Association of State Foresters in 2014. Pflugerville is a registered Tree City USA for its efforts and commitment to urban forestry.

pfluger park treeFour standards were met to receive the Tree City USA recognition established by the Arbor Day Foundation and National Association of State Foresters:

1. Tree Board or department (which is part of the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission).
2. Tree care ordinance.
3. Community forestry program with budget of at least $2 per capita.
4. An Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Trees reduce erosion of topsoil, cut heating and cooling costs, clean the air, produce oxygen, store carbon, provide food, timber and fuel, provide habitat for wildlife, increase property values and enhance the economic vitality of business areas in the community.  To further education of the importance of trees and tree care, the City of Pflugerville welcomed third graders from Timmerman, Brookhollow and Windermere to the Arbor Day Nature Fest at Pfluger Park on March 30 where students investigated organisms in stream water and learned about trees!
