Romance Readers Saturday, February 10 at the library

 The 10th Annual Romance Readers Social will be on Saturday, February 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Pflugerville Public Library. Every year, on the second weekend of February, the library hosts local romance authors for a fun-filled afternoon of book signings, author interviews, crafts and games. Enjoy cupcakes while chatting with authors and picking up some new reads. Anyone 18 and up is welcome to attend. The featured authors this year include Cathy Maxwell, writer of more than 30 published romance novels and recipient of the RT Book Review’s ‘Love and Laughter’ award; J. Kenner, author on the New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly and Wall Street Journal best list and #1 international bestselling author of over 70 novels; April Kihlstrom, the award winning author of over 30 published books, many of them Signet Regencies; Anissa Garcia, contemporary romance author living in Austin, Texas and Vivien Jackson whose debut science-fiction romance, Wanted and Wired, was selected as an Amazon Best Book of 2017. Grand Avenue Parkway

The week of February 12, weather permitting, the final street striping will be added to Grand Avenue Parkway completing the project. Grand Avenue Parkway construction began in November and involved rehabilitation and reconstruction of the pavement from Pflugerville Parkway to the southern city limits near Viki Lynn Place.

New traffic signals ready for activation

Traffic signals at the intersections of Heatherwilde Boulevard and Cheyenne Valley, and Grand Avenue Parkway and Black Locust Drive will be tested and activated for normal operations the week of February 12, weather permitting. These signals are currently flashing in an effort to increase motorists’ awareness of the new traffic conditions. Please drive safely.

Wells Branch Parkway streetlights out of service for construction

street lightFour street lights will be out of service on Wells Branch Parkway from Monday, February 12 through Friday, February 23 due to the construction of a driveway in the 1900 block of East Wells Branch Parkway. Upon the completion of the construction, the lamps will be turned back on.

Black History Month Celebration: Remembering the Historic Colored Addition Cemetery

Join the Pflugerville Public Library and Black Pflugerville as we celebrate the Pflugerville Historic Colored Addition Cemetery. There will be a short video about the cemetery, as well as historic documents and photos for guests to view. The celebration also includes family stories presented by the youth of the Excellence and Advancement Foundation, a reading of Louis Smith’s Slave Narrative by James Ware, and a storytelling panel hosted by Meme Styles. Storytellers include Mayor Victor Gonzalez, Bertha Russell and Ernestine Brooks. The event will be Saturday, February 17 at 3 p.m. at the Pflugerville Public Library.

Help the community; volunteer in victim services

Sign up to be Pflugerville Police Department Victim Services volunteer.  Training will begin with a mandatory orientation on Wednesday March 7, 2018, at 7 p.m. and training classes begin on Monday, March 19, 2018. Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7- 9:30 p.m. for eight weeks.

Topics will include how to work with victims of family violence, sexual assault, child victims, elderly victims, survivors of suicide and homicide and victims of other violent crimes.  

Any interested citizen who lives in Pflugerville or the surrounding area is encouraged to apply. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Contact Judy Allen at 512-990-6861 or for further information and application. You can also print an application from the web page or complete on line as long as you can do an electronic signature.

What's Happening

AARP Tax Help - AARP will offer tax assistance each Friday through April 13 starting at 10 a.m. at the library. This service is first come, first serve. For questions about the tax help program, please contact AARP at Library staff cannot answer questions about taxes.

Adobe Creative Suite at the library  - Use the Adobe Suite on library computers on Mondays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. or Wednesdays from 4 -7:30 p.m. Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are available for use. Adobe can be used for graphic design, photo editing, video editing and web development. Staff assistance is limited.

City facilities closed for Presidents Day on Monday, February 19 -The city of Pflugerville offices will be closed in observance of Presidents Day. The Pflugerville Library, Animal Shelter, Recycle Center, Recreation Center and city offices will be closed. The Recycle Center is open normal hours on Saturday, February 17 in advance of the Monday closure. If you have a water or wastewater issue when the city is closed, call the City Communications Hotline at the Police Department at 512-990-6700. If you have an emergency, please call 911.

Pfun Hiking - Pflugerville seniors enjoy exploring Pflugerville trails and staying active. Hikes begin at the Recreation Center and average one to three miles. Join the Pf Seniors group for only $3 for individual and $5 per couple (resident) and $10 individual and $15 couple (non-resident).

Save the Date

March 3 - Teen Job Pfair - The library hosts a teen job fair for teens ages 14-19 to meet with local employers and organizations and learn about local jobs and volunteer opportunities.

April 7 - Clean Up Day allows residents to dispose of items they can't normally leave curbside on a trash pickup day. Bring your televisions, latex paint and scrap metal to Clean Up Day for disposal. For a list of items you can bring, visit Pflugerville utility customers only. Proof of residency with utility bill required. No commercial contractors please. Clean Up Day begins at 8 a.m. Please be in line by 11:30 a.m. to ensure entry.
