Mayor Gonzales declares Celebrate Juneteenth Day
Mayor Gonzales has declared June 19, 2020 as Celebrate Juneteenth Day in the City of Pflugerville. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, the news was not delivered in Texas until June 19, 1865. June 19 became known as Juneteenth and celebrates the end of slavery.
“Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and celebrates the successes gained through greater opportunity,” the mayor said in his proclamation. “The celebration of Juneteenth reminds each of us of the precious promises of freedom, equality, and opportunity which are at the core of the American Dream.”
Residents are encouraged to celebrate Juneteenth and acknowledge the significance of the date by participating in Celebrate Juneteenth Day. You can read the mayor's proclamation here.
